It is an honor to be writing to you as dean of the University at
Buffalo School of Management and to be joining the school at such
an exciting time. With UB's recent designation as SUNY's flagship
campus and our ambition to become a top-25 research university, the
school is keenly focused on the markers critical to those ambitions:
disciplinary excellence, research funding, diversity of our faculty
and student body, and overall impact.
We have a strong foundation to build upon and, to that end, we
are expanding our collaborations across campus and throughout the
business community. As we continue to nurture faculty research and
teaching success, we are also growing our programs in innovative
ways while maintaining the excellence that is the hallmark of a School
of Management degree.
In addition, we are focusing our efforts in key areas to maximize
our impact. You'll see those efforts in several initiatives across the
school, including looking at climate change through the lens of busi-
ness; advancing and improving society through the social impact of
management; leveraging technology and information to solve prob-
lems; and inspiring innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership.
You'll see evidence of our impact in these areas of focus through-
out this issue of Buffalo Business — from our cover story on data
privacy (beginning on page 8) to our debut ranking in Entrepreneur
magazine (page 2) to stories of how our alumni are making an impact
in their fields (pages 7 and 23).
You'll also see how quickly we are adapting to the demands of
today's marketplace with the launch of two new programs: An Online
MBA and an Online MS in Business Analytics (page 3).
Throughout 2023, the School of Management will celebrate its
100th year of educating leaders, and I look forward to working with
many of you and your organizations as we move forward with these
ambitious plans.
