Spring 2023 Buffalo Business 11 "With the threat and frequency of cybercrime rising and the ever-increasing cost of data breaches, cybersecu- rity is increasingly important, especially in the context of moving services to the cloud," she says. "Thankfully there are many great frameworks and methodologies to help ensure good digital hygiene, as well as some great compa- nies like ours that can do that heavy liing for you." Ananth Iyer, professor and dean of the School of Management, says data security is critical for businesses because it's the foundation of trust. "As an organization, if you assure customers that you have the processes in place to protect their data but fail to do so, you should expect to get into a lot of trouble because you didn't meet their expectations," he says. "That's why the data privacy question becomes paramount, because as more data is collected, there is a built-in expectation: How do your processes ensure those expectations are met?" Confounding for consumers Even as governments pass laws like the California Consumer Privacy Act or the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation, consumers continue to bear a large burden to protect their information, according to Joana Gaia, clinical assistant professor of management science and systems. Spring 2023 Buffalo Business 11 Five Ways to Safeguard Your Data As our personal data increasingly goes digital — and as nefar- ious hackers become savvier than ever — a data breach is just a click or two away. We asked Clair Bauman, BS '98, MBA '00, manager of the Financial Services Regulatory Office at Kyndryl, what you can do to help protect yourself: 1. NEVER CLICK ON LINKS IN EMAILS. Always go to the website directly if you need to log in and check an account. 2. DON'T CALL ANY NUMBER PROVIDED IN AN EMAIL. If it's an issue with your credit card, call the number on the back of the card and don't fall for "urgent requests." 3. MAKE THEM TELL YOU IT'S MANDATORY. Just because a form asks for your Social Security number doesn't mean you have to fill it in. 4. USE A PASSWORD MANAGER. Services like 1Password help you create strong, unique passwords and will alert you of potential data leaks. 5. SECURE YOUR PHONE. Our whole lives are on our phones, so make sure you protect yours with a passcode, fingerprint or facial recognition. Cybercriminals will always focus on high-value targets and low-hanging fruit. " " CLAIR BAUMAN, BS '98, MBA '00 Director, Financial Services Regulatory Office Kyndryl
