10 SUPPLY CHAIN OPPORTUNITY GUIDE INSIDE A FAB The heart of a fab facility is the cleanroom where wafer processing occurs. However, operation of a cleanroom requires many layers of facility infrastructure. This cutaway diagram depicts multiple levels of a fab, beginning at the top-level air filtration fan deck, moving down to the cleanroom, where production takes place, to the clean subfab, where chemical and utility distribution equipment runs, to the utility deck, or dirty subfab, where waste is processed and chemical handling equipment is housed. LEVELS OF THE FAB Each level of a fab requires numerous suppliers. The fan deck drives demand for filtration and airflow systems. The cleanroom requires tool components, optics, metrology, consumables and precision parts. The sub-f ab concentrates pumps, abatement, gas cabinets and ultrapure water systems. The utility deck houses tanks, waste treatment and filtration systems. Firms can map their capabilities to the physical environment where they naturally fit, often through maintenance, repair and operations contracts, indirect services and Tier 1/Tier 2 subtier procurement, which remain the most realistic and scalable entry points for small and mid-sized companies.
