Autumn.2013Final_layout 8/1/13 12:45 PM Page 81 A Message from the Dean CELEBRATING 90 YEARS OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE 2013 is a momentous milestone for the School of Management as we mark our 90th year of educating business students. You will see in our commemorative cover story (starting on page 10) that we have had a long and illustrious history. The school has faced a number of challenges throughout the years, but has always endured. One common denominator is evident throughout: the School of Management is constantly changing and adapting to the needs of the university, our students, the business community and, in the larger picture, the country and the world. Many changes are small and incremental—the fine-tuning of a well-oiled machine. But some have been significant, and our very sur- ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................... vival as a school depended upon them, such as when our enrollment dropped precipitously during VISIT BUFFALO World War II and the curriculum was retooled temporarily to focus on strategy, tactics and logistics for the military. It is this adaptability, both the fine-tuning and the major overhauls, that keeps us strong as an educational institution. Our next exciting set of initiatives will be linked to Realizing UB 2020—the university's overall process for setting strategic directions for the next several years. As a school, we will contribute significantly to the university's new vision even as we continue to remain at the forefront of the changing landscape of business education. A key enabler of our success will be a significant growth in our faculty in the next four years. Enrollment and the quality and impact of our faculty continue to be high priorities for the school and UB as a whole. We are also keenly focused on our partnerships within UB and externally, particularly in the areas of health care, leadership and entrepreneurship. You'll see evidence of these priorities throughout this issue of Buffalo Business. From the newly resurrected MBA concentration in health care management (page 2) to cutting-edge research on bullying in the workplace (page 23) to the many partnerships we forge with individuals and organizations (Alumni Impact, page 28; Central Terminal project, page 8; and high school programs, page 26, to name a few), we are driven by a common mission that will ensure our growth and success in the immediate future and over the long haul. Thank you for all you do to support the school, and stay tuned for more good news as we look forward to the next 90 years. Sincerely, Arjang A. Assad Dean BUSINESS ONLINE AT M G T. B U F FA L O.
